•
The stories are taken from the collections published by Afanasief, Khudyakof, Erlenvein, and Chudinsky. "STORIES contained in the following pages are taken from the collections published by Afanasief, Khudyakof, Erlenvein, and Chudinsky. The South-Russian collections of Kulish and Rudchenko I have been able to use but little, there being no complete dictionary available of the dialect, or rather the language, in which they are written. Of these works that of Afanasief is by far the most important, extending to nearly 3,000 pages, and containing 332 distinct stories ー of many of which several variants are given, sometimes as many as five. Khudyakof's collection contains 122 skazkas ー as the Russian folk-tales are called ー Erlenvein's 41, and Chudinsky's 31. Afanasief has also published a separate volume, containing 33 "legends," and he has inserted a great number of stories of various kinds in his " Poetic views of the Old Slavonians about Nature," a work to which I have had ...

 •
The existence of the Russian Skazki or M?rchen (Stories, Folklore or Fairy Tales) was first made generally known to the British Public in about 1880 by William Ralston in his Russian Folk Tales. A year after the appearance of Ralston's book, the eminent Russian historian and arch?ologist, Peter Nikolaevich Polevoi selected, from the inexhaustible stores of Afanasiev, some three dozen of the Skazki (stories) most suitable for children, and worked them up into a fairy tale book which was published at St. Petersburg in 1874, under the title of Narodnuiya Russkiya Skazki (Popular Russian Stories).

To manipulate these quaintly vigorous old world stories for nursery purposes was, no easy task, but, on the whole, M. Polevoi did his work excellently well, softening the crudities and smoothing out the occasional roughness, turning these charming stories into entirely readable stories for children.

It is from the first Russian edition of M. Polevoi's book that the f...

 •
Baba Yaga is an ambiguous and fascinating figure. She appears in traditional Russian folktales as a monstrous and hungry cannibal, or as a canny inquisitor of the adolescent hero or heroine of the tale. In new translations and with an introduction by Sibelan Forrester, Baba Yaga: The Wild Witch of the East in Russian Fairy Tales is a selection of tales that draws from the famous collection of Aleksandr Afanas'ev, but also includes some tales from the lesser-known nineteenth-century collection of Ivan Khudiakov. This new collection includes beloved classics such as "Vasilisa the Beautiful" and "The Frog Princess," as well as a version of the tale that is the basis for the ballet "The Firebird."

The preface and introduction place these tales in their traditional context with reference to Baba Yaga's continuing presence in today's culture--the witch appears iconically on tennis shoes, tee shirts, even tattoos. The stories are enriched with many wonderful il...

 •
A Skazka ? (Russian: ска?зка) (Russian fairy tale or Russian folktale) is a Russian word literally meaning "story", but used to mean fairy tale or a fantasy tale. The term can be used in many different forms to determine the type of tale or story being told. A volshebnaya skazka [fairy tale ? волше?бная ска?зка] is considered a magical tale. Skazki o zhivotnykh [tales of animals] are tales about animals, and bytovye skazki [household tales] are tales about everyday life. These variations of skazki give the term more depth and detail the different types of fairy tales.

Similarly to Western European tradition, especially the German collection, published by the Brothers Grimm, Russian folklore was first collected by scholars and systematically studied in the 19th century. Russian fairy tales and folk tales were cataloged (compiled, grouped, numbered and published) by Alexander Afanasyev in his 1850s Narodnye russkie skazki. His compendium is still referred to by folklor...

 •
In Russia, as elsewhere in the world, folklore is rapidly scattering before the practical spirit of modern progress. The traveling peasant bard or story teller, and the devoted "nyanya", the beloved nurse of many a generation, are rapidly dying out, and with them the tales and legends, the last echoes of a nation's early joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, are passing away.

The student of folk-lore knows that the time has come when haste is needed to catch these vanishing stories and songs of the nation's youth and to preserve them for the delight of future generations. In sending forth the stories in the present volume, all of which thankfully captured and down in print in this volume. It was the hope of the compiler that they may enable Western children to share with the children of Russia the pleasure of glancing into the magic world of the old Slavic nation.

In this volume you will find the stories of:
The Tsarevna Frog
Seven Simeons...

 •
Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne, 8 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Fairy tales are an interesting genre to me, so I decided to look upon them in greater detail. To analyze a fairy tale's meaning seems to be a task almost impossible to fulfill, though. 'Every reader reads a different story. Writers who confidently tell us what fairy tales 'mean' are oversimplifying their complex, multilayered character,' states The Cambridge Guide to Children's Books in English (Watson 2001: 249) concerning the matter. Further on, it says that fairy tales 'do not contain meaning and they cannot impart meaning. They allow meanings to be made' (Watson 2001: 249). I began to wonder how fairy tales can be compared if not by their meaning and what they might have in common. The question leads to another approach on fairy tale analysis: a structural one.
