•
Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) was an American sociologist, author, poet, and lecturer whose influential work and unorthodox lifestyle made her an icon for future generations of feminists. Much of her work criticized common perceptions of the role of women in marriage and society, and advocated educational, financial, and cultural equality for women. In addition to "The Yellow Wall-Paper," which is studied by most students in the United States today, Gilman is well known for her 1898 book, "Women and Economics". In this book, Gilman employs the theory of Social Darwinism as a basis for promoting reform. She points out that human beings are the only species in which the female is dependent on the male for survival, and that men have claimed credit for all human progress. This book made Gilman an instant success, bringing her the independence which she desired, and was later translated into seven languages and adopted as a textbook.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお...

Women and Economics - A Study of the Economic Relation Between Men and Women as a Factor in Social Evolution is a book written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and published in 1898. It is considered by many to be her single greatest work, and as with much of Gilman's writing, the book touched a few dominant themes: the transformation of marriage, the family, and the home, with her central argument: "the economic independence and specialization of women as essential to the improvement of marriage, motherhood, domestic industry, and racial improvement." The 1890s were a period of intense political debate and economic challenges, with the Women's Movement seeking the vote and other reforms. •
A substantial amount of literature suggests that women differ from men in various financial matters. When it comes to dealing with money and finance, women are on average still more inexperienced compared to men. Since they earn less in most cases and live longer, they are more reluctant to take losses and eager to save costs. Women tend to integrate their values into their financial plan, a fact that makes socially responsible investments more attractive to them.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

 •
Centrally, Gilman argues that women must change their cultural identities. Early on, she mentions that humans are the only species in which the female has to depend on the male for survival. This dependence requires women to pay off their debt through domestic services, or “sex-functions”.Gilman argues that women “work longer and harder than most men, and not solely in maternal duties.” Further, Gilman states that female activities in general are directed by men. These sexual distinctions have led to an odd distribution of power and have been detrimental to both genders, in Gilman's view.
These sexual distinctions have left women behind and allowed men to claim credit for human progress. Gilman argues that women fulfill the dual roles of mother and martyr, and pass these roles down to their children, creating a continuing image of women as unpaid workers and nurturers. This in turn, has stunted women's creative and personal growth. Gilman was a confirmed suffragist, but...

 •
Charlotte Perkins Gilman (/???lm?n/; n?e Perkins; July 3, 1860 ? August 17, 1935), also known as Charlotte Perkins Stetson, her first married name, was a prominent American humanist, novelist, writer of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction, and a lecturer for social reform.[1] She was a utopian feminist and served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. She has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.[2] Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story "The Yellow Wallpaper", which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis.
Less well known are Gilman's views on race. To solve the so-called 'Negro Problem' in the United States in the early twentieth century, Gilman suggested a system of forced labor she called "enlistment".
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリッ...

 •
Originally published in 1981, Woman’s Worth takes up the challenge to the male preserve of economics ? which was raised nearly a century ago by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in her classic work Women and Economics.

Patriarchal economic systems ? socialist as well as capitalist ? are founded upon women’s unpaid labour. On this premise, Lisa Leghorn and Katherine Parker base their exploration of the economic basis of women’s culture across cultures: from the USA to South America, the Middle East, socialist countries, Africa and Europe.

Women’s Worth is accessible and informative to those who have been intimidated by the term ‘international economics’. Its sources are women’s perspective and experience in many countries, in their words and in their writings, published and unpublished. Thus the authors are able to reveal the economic nature of facets of women’s lives which have hitherto been dismissed by traditional economics ...

 •
**An analysis of how nineteenth-century women regional writers represent political economic thought

WINNER OF THE ELIZABETH AGEE PRIZE IN AMERICAN LITERATURE**

Readers of late nineteenth-century female American authors are familiar with plots, characters, and households that make a virtue of economizing. Scholars often interpret these scenarios in terms of a mythos of parsimony, frequently accompanied by a sort of elegiac republicanism whereby self-sufficiency and autonomy are put to the service of the greater goodーa counterworld to the actual economic conditions of the period.

In Kitchen Economics: Women’s Regionalist Fiction and Political Economy, Thomas Strychacz takes a new approach to the question of how female regionalist fictions represent “the economic” by situating them within traditions of classical political economic thought. Offering case studies of key works by Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary Wilkins Freeman, Harriet Beecher S...
